This course is ideal for those looking to improve their personal defense capabilities through realistic, hands-on training that simulates real-world situations.
Students looking to attend this course should be proficient with whichever pistol they bring to the course - this class is designed to teach new skills to the proficient and safe shooter and is not designed to teach new or inexperienced shooters.
Course Objectives
By the end of this course, participants will:
- Refine Grip, Sight Alignment, and Sight Picture: Master proper stance, grip, and visual alignment for consistent accuracy.
- Improve Trigger Manipulation: Enhance trigger control for smoother, more precise shooting.
- Learn to Fire Multiple/Consecutive Rounds: Develop the ability to shoot quickly and accurately in defensive scenarios.
- Balance Speed with Precision: Master techniques for maintaining accuracy while shooting at a faster pace.
- Engage Multiple Targets: Learn how to quickly assess and shoot multiple targets in defensive situations.
- Navigate Shoot/No-Shoot Scenarios: Practice decision-making under pressure, determining when and where to engage based on evolving threats.
- Shoot While Moving: Refine your ability to engage targets while on the move, a critical skill in defensive situations.
Instructor Qualifications
- Certified Instructor in Concealed Carry & Home Defense Fundamentals by the USCCA
- Certified Instructor for Countering the Mass Shooter Threat by the USCCA
- FLSSA Smallbore Director and assistant for the CFRPC Junior Precision Shooting Program
Course Schedule and Duration
- Total Duration: 4 hours (30 – 60 minutes of classroom instruction and 3-4 hours of range time).
Curriculum Details
Classroom Instruction (30-60 minutes)
- Review of Defensive Shooting Fundamentals: Cover grip, stance, sight alignment, and sight picture with a focus on defensive shooting.
- Trigger Control and Manipulation: Improve accuracy through better trigger control.
- Balancing Speed and Accuracy: Learn how to shoot rapidly without compromising precision.
- Introduction to Multiple Targets, Shoot/No-Shoot Scenarios, and Shooting While Moving: Understand the fundamentals of engaging multiple threats, making quick decisions under pressure, and shooting while moving in defensive scenarios.
Range Time (3-4 hours)
- Live Fire Exercises: Hands-on shooting drills to practice:
- Accurate shots using refined grip, sight alignment, and trigger control.
- Firing multiple rounds quickly and accurately.
- Engaging Multiple Targets: Drills to practice engaging multiple threats, emphasizing quick target transitions and maintaining accuracy.
- Shooting with Movement: Engage targets while moving laterally and forward, simulating defensive scenarios where mobility is key.
- Shoot/No-Shoot Scenarios: Practice decision-making under pressure, distinguishing between legitimate threats and non-threats in a controlled environment.
- Shooting from the Holster: Practical application of drawing from the holster while incorporating movement, multiple targets, and shoot/no-shoot decisions.
Safety Protocols​
- Strict Adherence to Safety Rules: All participants must follow range safety protocols at all times.
- Safety Briefing: Conducted at the beginning of classroom and range sessions, covering emergency procedures, range commands, and proper firearm handling.
- Instructor Supervision: Continuous oversight by certified instructors to ensure proper handling of firearms and immediate correction of any unsafe behavior.
- Emergency Preparedness: First aid kits and emergency contact details are readily available, with all participants agreeing to safety restrictions imposed by the instructor.
- Students agree to any restrictions the instructor may impose.
- Failure to comply with or breaking of safety protocols may result in students being asked to leave the range.
Equipment and Materials
For Participants to Bring:
- Appropriate Clothing:
- Close-toed shoes.
- Long pants and high-cut shirts.
- Brimmed hats (optional but recommended).
- Firearms and Ammunition:
- Personal handguns (unloaded and cased separately from ammunition).
- 250 rounds of ammunition.
- Protective Gear:
- Eye and ear protection (participants may bring their own or use provided gear).
Provided by the Instructor
- Hearing and eye protection (if needed).
- ECI’s (Empty Chamber Indicators) for safety demonstrations.
- Water for participants.
Assessment and Evaluation
- Continuous Observation: Instructors will assess participants during classroom and range activities to gauge skill development and application of techniques.
- Range Exercises: Participants will be evaluated based on their ability to safely and accurately perform live fire exercises, including shooting with movement and engaging multiple targets.
- Q&A Sessions: Held at the end of each major topic to assess understanding and address any uncertainties.
- Final Debriefing: After range time, participants will receive a summary of their performance and recommendations for further improvement.
- Optional Practical Test: At the instructor’s discretion, a test may be offered to formally assess proficiency in shooting fundamentals and defensive techniques.
Course Completion Criteria
- Full Attendance: Participants must attend and actively engage in all classroom and range sessions.
- Safe Firearm Handling: Demonstrating safe handling of firearms throughout the course is mandatory.
- Proficiency in Defensive Techniques: Participants must successfully demonstrate proficiency in shooting fundamentals, accuracy, defensive shooting techniques such as shooting with movement, and engaging multiple targets.
- Engagement in Q&A: Active participation in discussions and activities to ensure understanding of key concepts.
